Ideas to help you navigate the world of work

About

Headshot

Louisa is a trained lawyer who left private practice to work in legal recruitment, where she spent 20 years helping Australian lawyers with their careers.

In 2017 Louisa started working with law students at Monash University to help improve their employability and Good Counsel Consulting was born. Since then Louisa has worked with students from all disciplines to advise and assist with their career choices. She has worked at Melbourne University and RMIT, as a senior careers adviser and in state government schools on the Year 9 My Careers Insights programme and with the National Careers Institute on the School Leavers’ Information Service.

She studied Law/Arts at Adelaide University, the Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice at the University of South Australia and completed a Graduate Certificate of Career Education and Development at RMIT. She is a professional member of the Career Development Association of Australia.

Louisa has worked with people and their careers for the past twenty years and has come to understand that happiness in your career is integral to happiness in life. She understands that finding the role that uses your natural strengths and aptitudes, challenges, stretches you and gives you satisfaction, as well as rewards, is the key.

Research shows that young people these days will potentially have 17 different jobs over 5 careers in their lifetime and as a result it will be necessary for them to adopt a different mindset towards careers than they have in the past. A design thinking mindset is needed in a rapidly changing chaotic world.

Using design thinking in careers helps you to reframe, ideate, try things and be curious. As a narrative career counsellor, Louisa works with you to enable you to become the expert in your life and career.

  • School student career counselling & subject selection

Students often have problems identifying their strengths and where they can use them. Once we have identified strengths and interests we can advise on the best subjects students should undertake for VCE or IB. Alternatively a VCAL path that leads to an apprenticeship or traineeship may be more suited. We help students to understand what the jobs of now and the future are and the day to day tasks in certain roles.

What if you don’t know what you want to do when I finish school? That’s fine-most students don’t. Use of career assessment tools, such as Morrisby, are invaluable to discover more about the student.

  • School leavers

Leaving school is a huge transition in a teenager’s life. We can help a school leaver understand what suitable courses there are available to them and where they should study. It may be that an apprenticeship or traineeship is more suitable. What about a gap year? We can also help advise on how to get a part time job and an internship once the student is studying or has finished school.

  • Job application preparation assistance

Job application preparation for graduate roles and internships is an arduous task. Louisa has had many years of experience assisting students at universities (and many clients) with their job application preparation to ensure they are putting their best foot forward. She can help you write a strong resume and cover letter, identify your transferable skills and the key skills that are required for the role. If you are lucky enough to get that coveted interview she will help you prepare so that you can put your best foot forward. Louisa can help you with common questions such as; what is an applicant tracking system, how do I get an interview, what happens at an assessment centre, what is a behavioural based interview question and what is the STAR method used for answering interview questions?

  • Transition to work from university

Louisa has counselled many students who are not sure what they can do with their broad degree and come up with ideas for them to explore. She helps them look at current hiring trends, internship opportunities, work integrated learning opportunities and weigh up whether they should undertake further study.

  • Early Career Clients

If you are not enjoying your first role out of university or think that you have gone down the wrong path it is good idea to undertake career counselling to work out how you can get where you want to go. We can help you formulate a career plan so that you can take the necessary steps to get where you want to go.

  • Mid career clients

You may have been made redundant or are very unhappy in your current role and reconsidering your future. We will help you discover your alternatives, your transferable skills and the opportunities that are available for you. We can help you formulate a career plan using design thinking, and help you reach your goals.

Testimonials

  • Graduate 2021

I thought I would let you know that I accepted a graduate position with ********* yesterday which I am very happy about! It was a very tough call between ******* and *********. I have been paralegalling at ********** since my clerkship in December and have really enjoyed my time there, but I also had an awesome time at *******! In the end I just went with my gut and thought ********* was a slightly better choice for me. It was hard turning down ******** yesterday though!
I also wanted to thank you again for all your time and advice throughout this entire process. I wouldn’t be here without your help!

  • Law Graduate 2020

Louisa provided incredibly valuable guidance and information for me as I navigated the Law Graduate Application process. She possesses very in-depth knowledge of the legal industry in Australia and armed with that knowledge, and information about me and my interests and attributes, she tailored her advice to me specifically and suggested firms I otherwise may not have considered. Beyond that, she provided me with resources and advice on building my resume and presenting my strongest attributes in a positive way. She was incredibly helpful and I would certainly recommend her services to any law student navigating the clerkship and traineeship application process.
